I have a biorhythm app on my iPhone that is fun to use. If you have never calculated your own biorhythms there are several websites that can demonstrate this theory. The fact that there are periodic cycles that affect body functions is not in dispute. In some cultures the balance of these attributes is a way to focus on a meaningful life. Unfortunately, there is no scientific research that confirms the biorhythm theory even though we intuitively know that certain factors are more than just coincidence. We know that things such as emotional trauma have an impact upon physical health. It is also unfortunate that human beings are not simply predictable meat calculators that can tell us when certain moods or attitudes will strike and grind us to a halt. Those predictions could prevent a lot of stress! There is a good reason that we are unpredictable… we value our freedom to decide things for ourselves. As a result, we have to deal with environmental issues and the randomness of life to find our own balance.
In the profession of human resources, we have chosen to work with the most unmanageable of all resources, employees. This is the one tangible resource that can’t be trimmed, sanded, painted, or added up on a spreadsheet. This means we must have at least a basic understanding of what makes people tick. More importantly, we need to have an in-depth and intimate understanding of what makes ourselves tick.
Our mind and basic intellect is one facet of our being that distinguishes us from other animals. When something or someone touches our lives, we have the ability to reason and base decisions on logic. We can also occasionally suffer from stunted intellectual growth that can overlap other factors causing physical pain or relationship issues. Intellectual maintenance and growth is only possible by fueling it with input from positive sources. Otherwise, negativity creeps into our heads and forces us to stall out.

Most therapeutic cures begin somewhere around the spiritual. Traditional 12-step programs for addiction recovery begin with first an honest admission that we are powerless over the addiction followed by a step acknowledging that there is a “power greater than ourselves.” Even normalcy requires periods of silence, meditation, prayer or separation from the physical to maintain sanity and balance our being.

The intrusion of environmental influences on a person’s balance often begins with another person, but other irritants can be self generated by events that do not turn out as expected. Disappointment, anger, grief, and dozens of other emotions need to be dealt with every day. Intellectually or spiritually we have an expectation of outcomes of our actions and the failure of these to play out correctly can upset our emotional being. Likewise, emotions can wreck intellectual and spiritual growth.

The physical aspect of a person’s self is the most believable as a true biorhythm. A woman’s monthly cycle happens more or less regularly and other chronobiological or circadian rhythms are a proven fact. It is really a much simpler concept to understand than calculating a physical chart because we all know that we do not work, learn or reason as well when we are physically ill. Exercise and diet are ways to positively, or negatively, impact the physical body and affect other parts of our being.

Fortunately, our complex composition as a human being is shared by others and interpersonal interaction keeps us focused. Giving of ourselves charitably and accepting the gifts of others boosts our holistic immune system and gives us overall health. Conversation and physical contact is an inoculation against the death of our bodies and our minds.
