Reviewing This Week on Make HR Happen – A Smorgasbord of Topics

Taking a break from the multi-post themes of recent weeks, these articles were the product of thoughts that just happened to show themselves when the keyboard was silent. Stay tuned… research is afoot for two additional themes in the near future.

TwoStarfishOnBeachMar 4 - An Old Motivational Story That Still Works - Why do we do what we do? I wonder at people’s motivations when help is volunteered loudly and publically. Even worse, self professed experts change all the rules because of a new “revolutionary” idea that becomes a moneymaker. True help for others comes unselfishly and sometimes at great cost for the helper. Other times it is just a simple statement or demonstration of faith. Several years ago I attended a college graduation where the commencement speaker talked at an only-half-awake crowd. She prevented their lapse into total unconsciousness with several momentary stirring thoughts. – more –

Mar 5 - Measuring Personal Influence  – I hesitate to even use the words “personal brand” because this is a much maligned phrase that may mean everything or it may mean nothing. The concept of a brand has its origins in product marketing. Marketers have devised and mastered the art of establishing a company’s brand, are able to measure its impact, and calculate its worth. Many of these expert marketing people show up on job seeker Twitter chats or other online forums to show off their knowledge and teach about personal branding… only it usually doesn’t transfer well to people branding.  – more –

Mar 6 - Balance Your Social Media Universe  – Researching this article has been a challenge to my ability to focus on anything for long periods of time. I am the kind of person that will find a useless item out of place in my office while looking for my car keys and after a fit of obsessive compulsive tinkering still have not found my keys. Freud would probably diagnose this as anal retentive behavior, so I am glad that others have challenged his belief that this kind of behavior is related to toilet training. Most of my psychological issues stem from being scared by a tricycle at age three.  – more –

Mar 7 - Misbehavioral Interviewing  - Several years ago I was on the interviewee side of the table talking to a hi-tech aerospace firm about a job as a recruiting manager for one of their divisions. After surviving on the corporate recruiter side of the interview table for years I was surprised at how totally unprepared I was for this. I had led teams of recruiters, conducted manager interview training, and had been totally immersed in the Targeted Selection® behavioral interviewing methods… – more –

EngagingGearsMar 8 - An Engagement Theory  - It has been very tempting to jump onto the buzzword bandwagon about employee engagement. Reading all the blog posts, news articles and chat sessions where this is discussed, not one single thing has been clear. If we are to discuss the engagement of someone, shouldn’t we agree on a basis for the discussion? Most of the rhetoric is frankly warmed over management thought with a new word used to describe it. My knee jerk reaction to anything new is to try and learn something from the experts while also keeping a cynical eye open for the recycled crap.  – more –
