Why Networking Doesn’t Work – History has given modern society the concept that all humans are equal. This is a political truism that has spawned governments and has civilized our culture. It is at the center of our belief system that there is a right and a wrong, a good and a bad in almost everything. Equality is at the very core of who we are. We cringe when some nut-job tries to prove scientifically that one race or gender or nationality is inferior to another. Something Different Today: Perspective – My profile picture could be the stereotypical head shot with a devil whispering in one ear and an angel in the other. No I don’t hear voices in my head…I create them. I can understand anger, desperation and depression from the perspective of someone who has had to endure both personal tragedies as well as those which I have shared with friends and loved ones. I also have so many memories of unsurpassed joy and goodness proving that life offers not only balance but rewards. – more -Â

Discrimination Is Not a Four Letter Word – Working in HR is sometimes a challenge because diversity is often given lip service by management and it is usually up to us to protect company interests without allowing discriminatory action because of gender, race, ethnicity, national origin, sexual orientation, age and a number of other classes which may or may not be protected. This brings me to my definition of the word “discrimination.†As stated, it is not a four letter word (I counted), but obviously when the meaning is given the sterile dictionary definition it is not a bad thing. – more –

You Have a (Not So) Hidden Agenda - Over the past several months I have had the opportunity to talk, chat or tweet with several people who without knowing it started my spidey sense tingling. In an era when we see people fired from public or entertainment jobs by an inappropriate phrase or gesture you would think that our correctness filters would have been fine tuned to avoid offending the person to whom we are speaking. – more –

Organizational Problem Solving – Wisdom is not a characteristic of age. Knowledge is not a measure of education. Solutions to problems are not found by intuition. We accept these generalizations as true although we sometimes act otherwise. To a certain degree, experience gained along with seniority is to be respected, educated people have been trained to think at a higher level, some things are intuitively correct, however in business we cannot assume this to be true without some sort of validation. – more –
