“If a cluttered desk is a sign of a cluttered mind, of what, then, is an empty desk a sign?” – Albert Einstein

About Feng Shui and Your Underwear Drawer – For those who don’t know, Feng Sui is an ancient Chinese art and science that deals with the balance of energies in any given space. Good feng shui contributes to good health. In modern times the practice that has evolved has less to do with orienting the life force, or Ch’i, but more of a table of rules that prescribe colors, shapes and relationship of objects to create an environmentally pleasing balance. A highly controversial topic, the feng shui practitioners have been highly paid for their advice by some and called scam artists by others.

Tea Leaves and Technology – The centuries-old art of tasseography, or reading of tea leaves, is at risk of extinction. The mysteries of having someone with a psychic gift discover meaning in the remnants of a cup of tea has already been eroded by our instantly accessible media. A quick online search not only reveals the tea leaf patterns for anyone to interpret, but also gives instruction on how to prepare the cup of tea for a reading.

You Have the Right to Remain Silent – Comedian Ron White came up with a classic line in his routine about a time he was picked up by the police for being drunk in public, “I had the right to remain silent…but I didn’t have the ability.” Genius! In the comedic pause between the first and second part of that sentence, people started to think about what he was going to say next. When the anticipation was over they roared with laughter even though many saw what was coming.

The Three Essential Key Elements for a Great Hire -  Quality of Hire as a metric receives a lot of attention. Theories abound about the importance of QoH and how to measure it. There are 998 different theories about QoH. That number (that I just made up) is about as real as most of the discussion. There are consulting firms who specialize in fixing the QoH situation, there are software programs that will allow users to simply plug in numbers and get a calculated QoH, and volumes have been written on do-it-yourself methods.

The True Meaning of Passion – I wrote an article last week where I mentioned that one of The Three Essential Key Elements for a Great Hire was passion. I fully expected to get some push back on that and I’m sure that some of my fellow recruiters read that part, did a double take and then just rolled their eyes. On my more cynical days I am capable of an eye roll as well when I hear comments like that taken out of context.
