Reviewing This Week on Make HR Happen – October 14 thru October 20, 2012

In case you missed this week’s articles, here is a summary:

Job Seekers: Embracing Negativity for Positive Results – There was a New York Times Op-Ed piece a few months ago by Oliver Burkeman titled The Power of Negative Thinking. This grabbed my attention because I have always been an advocate of the opposite theory that positive thinking keeps us on target and productive. In this article Burkeman highlights new research that is actually a confirmation of ancient philosophies that there must be balance between positive forces and negative ones.

Broken Promises by a Recruiter? – One of the hardest things to do as a recruiter is to deliver on expectations. Notice that I didn’t say delivering on promises. There is a hidden dialog buried in our memories of a child quizzing a parent, “But you promised!” That scenario may have been an actual commitment that was broken or simply an expression of disappointment that the child did not get her own way. We grow older, but never really escape from that scripted vision.

HR Organization for Production – When looking at companies and their hierarchy it becomes apparent that there is a sliding standard regarding the value of Human Resources. This is obvious when considering where HR sits on the various org charts. At the academic level it would seem that there could be a standard organization that would produce the most effective results. Discounting what I know today, if my IE course had tasked me to look at this aspect of a company and determine the best organization for productivity I would have first looked at the standards set for HR relative to the company mission.
